As Heard Recently

It’s no secret that I love Public Radio’s This American Life. LOVE IT. I’m a couple of weeks behind in podcasts, so the episode I was listening to this morning on the bus was from 04.23.10 – “True Urban Legends.” Remember a few years ago when everyone was all hyped up about how cell phones would inevitably cause brain tumors and that we should be really careful about how long we keep them close to our heads? Well, apparently, there’s still great concern about that, especially in several European countries where people have actually destroyed cell towers. What?! Research is kind-of-sort-of divided, but it’s all pretty interesting. You can stream the episode here or on iTunes.

D and I started listening to Dean Koontz’s Seize the Night on CD during our roadtrip last weekend. We have a few hours left and I’ve got to know what happens. There are a couple other Christopher Snow books out there. (I think — I haven’t searched too much for fear of spoilers.) Anyway, we aren’t finished, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far.

Wedding Trends: Enough Already

I’ll admit that I’ve been scanning too many wedding blogs lately. But. Please. I don’t get:

Name Changing

I’ve been thinking a lot lately on name changing and marriage. When I changed my name several years ago, a huge part of me was devastated. I had never wanted to change my name and did it anyway, to please someone else. After the marriage dissolved, the first thing I did was run to the Social Security office and get my name back. It felt like I’d gotten myself back. It was such a relief.

Now that I have the opportunity to take a new name again, I feel differently. On the one hand, I feel strongly about my name. On the other hand, I’m very proud of the person I’m marrying, and I’d like to share his name.

So. Incredibly timely are two articles. Joann M. Weiner talks about Her Husband’s Last Name over at Politics Daily. And Meg of A Practical Wedding reminds us that we don’t have to make a decision about a name right away.

National Library Week

It’s National Library Week.  The best thing anyone could do to celebrate is visit your local library this week. And! Contact your senators, asking them to support library funding.

Here is a Huffington Post article on the current situation of public libraries. It contains a great quote from Keith Richards (!):

“When you are growing up there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully: the church, which belongs to God, and the public library, which belongs to you. The public library is a great equaliser.”

Three Things

1. How timely. The Missoula Dress from Mod Retro.

2. Huh? Libraries now have to-go services. I’m really not sure how I feel about this.

3. Mine might turn out like a big blob with wheels, but I’m thinking of trying this. A template from Scherenschnitte.
