Summer Reading Reflections

I survived my first summer as a children’s librarian. Yay me. These are the things I have learned:

1) You can’t please everyone. (Parents will always ask, “Is this all you have planned for the kids?” even if you have a program or something to offer every day. Do what you think is best and aim for quality over quantity.)

2) You will be exhausted. (It is demanding trying to keep up with the SRP and take care of your regular duties. It just is.)

3) Kids still love to read. (This made me more happy than anything and made the work worth it.)

To remember for next year:

1) Schedule/Request paid programs at earlier times during the day. (This was a request from a lot of daycares and parents. I also think it will help generate higher attendance.)

2) Create a display that promotes the SRP and shows participation. I think this will help generate more excitement.

3) Let the kids vote on the weekly movie. (This way I don’t have to pick.)

4) Triple-check schedules and calendars. (For reals.)

Summer Reading Begins

I woke up this morning with my mind spinning with all the things I needed to get done today. I was worried about not having a summer display up yet. I was worried about setting up the meeting room for babytime and using the parachute. I was worried that the petting zoo people would not show up on time. Worried, worried, WORRIED!

And you know what? Everything was fine. Babytime was great, the parachute was a hit, and the petting zoo folks were fantastic! So I was worried over nothing. I still don’t have my display finished, but so what? I doubt anyone noticed.

I want to have a successful summer and have exceptional programming, but I never feel like I’m doing enough. But I need to cut myself some slack. I’ve only been a children’s librarian for eight months, so I’m not an expert. I’m trying and I’m doing really well with the resources I have. And that’s good!

Houston Symphony

Last night D and I went to see our Houston Symphony play the music of Queen. I thought it was a really great performance. The vocalist actually did an excellent job of re-creating those Freddie Mercury songs that are really hard to pull off by practically anyone else.

On a side note, when we were standing in line to pick up our tickets, I saw that Ira Glass is coming to Houston in October! Not with This American Life, but with a show called Radio Stories and Other Stories. Tickets should go on sale soon. Very exciting.

The Fall

We watched The Fall this week. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I really liked it. I first saw the poster for it at the Angelika Theater a couple of years ago and assumed it was just some weird artsy fantasy movie. But it was definitely more than that. Highly recommend. If nothing else, see it for the adorable little girl who plays the main role.

You Say Donut, I Say Doughnut

It’s National Donut Day! We like Shipley’s Donuts around here, but there are a lot of good mom & pop places, too.

For the adventurous, make your own!

Bike to Work Day

Man, do I wish I could ride my bike to work. But freeways and highways and potential cardiac arrest prevents me.

This is a cool video showing morning rush hour in The Netherlands, where biking is an essential part of people’s commute. (via A Cup of Jo)

ACL Fest 2010

The lineup for the 2010 Austin City Limits Music Festival was announced a day or two ago. I saw the list pop up in my email, but I wasn’t really like, “Yowsa!” about anything. And all I could think of was The Dude saying, “I hate The f#@*ing Eagles, man!”

But The Strokes, Norah Jones, Phish, Robert Earl Keen… those are a big deal. And Blues Traveler and Slightly Stoopid?! Flashbacks to my youth, dude.

The year Lori and went, we had a lot of fun. So I’m sure I’ll revisit it again someday. It would be really great to go and see a band you love. That way you forget about all the blistering heat and sweaty folks.
